SECURE • SHAPED • SENT
Redeemer Sermon Series Overview: Who Redeemer Is and Where God Is Leading Us
WHY THIS SERIES, WHY NOW?
Redeemer is in a season of transition, and we believe God is using this moment as an opportunity to bring greater clarity to who we are and where we are going.
This is not about building ‘my ideal church” it’s about discerning God’s vision for Redeemer.
Over the next several months, we want to explore our core values / distinctives:
What has shaped Redeemer in the past, what defines us today, and what God may be forming us into for the future
This series is meant to be a working draft or a “vision-in-process.”
We are not presenting a finalized mission statement, but inviting the church family to pray, discern, and grow together as God leads
THE FRAMEWORK: THREE WORDS
To guide this exploration, we are using three words: SECURE • SHAPED • SENT
These three words come from this rough mission statement:
“We exist to become a family of Jesus followers who are secure in the Gospel, shaped by the way of Jesus, and sent for the good of our city and the world.”
Each word answers a key question:
SECURE (Identity) who are we?
We are secure in the love, grace, forgiveness, and finished work of Jesus.
SHAPED (Formation) who are we becoming?
We are being formed through apprenticeship to Jesus, learning to live in our new identity.
SENT (Mission) Why are we here?
We are sent outward to love, serve, and witness… so others can taste and see God’s goodness.
ROOTS - Secure in the Gospel
Our identity is rooted in Christ.
We are held, loved, adopted, and forgiven.
TRUNK / LIMBS - Shaped by the Way of Jesus
This is the forming work of God in our lives.
We are being transformed into the character of Jesus.
FRUIT - Sent for the Good of the City and the World
As we pursue Jesus and join Him in the restoration of all things, the fruit of the Spirit becomes visible through love, justice, mercy, compassion, and faithful witness.
PART 1: SECURE IN THE GOSPEL
Secure is foundational language: Ephesians 1:3–5, Ephesians 1:13–14, Ephesians 2:19
The Gospel is not good advice, it is good news that Jesus has accomplished what we could not
Redeemer has long been built on the belief that our identity is received, not earned.
Being secure in the Gospel means:
We rest in the finished work of Christ
We live as loved (not as performers)
We find freedom from fear-based religion
We embrace authenticity, transparency, and confession
We become a safe place for questions, doubt, and rebuilding faith
Key theme: We don’t obey in order to be loved, we obey because we are loved.
PART 2: SHAPED BY THE WAY OF JESUS
Shaped is formational language. Ephesians 4:1–3, Ephesians 4:22–24, Ephesians 5:1–2
This is discipleship, apprenticeship to Jesus.
If “Secure” is about our identity in Christ, then “Shaped” is about learning how to live from that identity.
Being shaped means:
We are intentionally formed by Jesus rather than the world
We practice abiding in Christ (John 15)
We engage spiritual disciplines not to earn love, but to receive grace
We pursue transformation from the inside out
Two primary ingredients in Redeemer’s formation culture are:
Community: We grow best together. Spiritual growth does not happen in isolation.
Surrounded by Community
Prayer: We depend on the Holy Spirit for transformation, wisdom, and fruitfulness.
Saturated by Prayer and the Holy Spirit
Key theme: Everyone is being shaped, the only question is who (or what) is shaping us.
PART 3: SENT FOR THE GOOD OF OUR CITY AND THE WORLD
Sent is missional language. Ephesians 3:10–11, Ephesians 5:8–10, Ephesians 6:18–20
Following Jesus is not meant to be private spirituality—it should reshape how we live in the world.
A church that is secure and shaped will always be sent.
Being sent means:
We pursue Jesus and join Him in the restoration of all things
We serve our neighborhoods, workplaces, friendships, and families
We engage culture with humility and biblical clarity
We pursue mercy, justice, compassion, and truth
We stand with the marginalized as a theological response to God’s character
We seek to display the Kingdom of God locally and globally
Redeemer has often described this value as: “In the City, for the City.”
But we also believe we are to be:
In our families, for our families
In our neighborhoods, for our neighborhoods
In our workplaces, for our workplaces
In our friendships, for our friendships
In your _______ for your _______
Key theme: We are sent into everyday life to bring the love of Jesus to our city and our world.
SERIES GOAL:
This series is meant to help Redeemer become increasingly clear about:
Who we are
Who we are becoming
Why we exist
Where God is leading us
We are praying that God will use this season to:
Deepen unity
Strengthen identity
Renew spiritual formation
Expand missional engagement
Prepare Redeemer for the future God has planned
WHERE THE SERIES IS HEADED:
Over the next several months, different speakers will help us explore each of these themes through scripture, personal testimony, and Redeemer’s history.
This is not meant to be just a lecture series but a church wide discernment process
Our hope is that the whole congregation will participate through:
Sunday teaching
Community Group discussion
Prayer and feedback
Personal reflection and practice
